Proven seeds

After reading dozens of e-mails on genetics, which I read with interest
because I have some science education under my belt, I thought I was
clear until the discussion of auctions/raffles/giveaways arose and Mr.
Belgium asked what proven seeds are.
GREAT question! If I understand it correctly, there are no PROVEN seeds
being given away OR sold at auction. The only way to prove a seed is to
plant it, nurture it and see if it pops a punkin of any size. There may
be other seeds being offered that were brothers/sisters, even
woom-mates, of a proven seed. Am I wrong, or dead wrong?
