RE: Surnames & acronyms
The 1140 fathers the 701. Pumpkins do their thing outside of the bounds of
marriage. So the 641 is the seed parent giving you the plant that produced
the female flower. The 1140 is the pollen parent. The plant producing the
male flower. The pollinated fruit grows and is weighed in to become the 701
Morgan. If you are clear on this we'll move on. This plant grown from the
the 641 Morgan has another pumpkin on a side vine. There were no 1140 male
flowers available in the patch the day this female blossom was opened, so
you used male flowers from the same plant. So the resulting pumpkin is a
641 Morgan X 641 Morgan, or 641 Morgan X Self. This pumpkin weighs in at
688 lbs. and becomes the 688 Morgan ( 641 Morgan X Self) Now the other
plant in your patch is grown from the 1140 Stelts seed. This plant has a
pumpkin that was pollinated by the bees as you didn't see it the day it
bloomed and you noticed it a few days later when you saw your pumpkin
growing. Lets say this pumpkin weighed in at 902 lbs. when you took it to
HMB (Half Moon Bay). This pumpkin is now the 902 Morgan (1140 Stelts X
Open) Open is used when the male pollinator is unknown or multiple males
from different plants are used. All the growers from the PNWGPG (Pacific
Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers) will clap you on the shoulder and tell you
what a great job you did.
I hope this answered some questions for the new folks on the list.
