Hi list,
Upon reading many of the posts concerning auctions and the desire to purchase
a seed from a world record pumpkin, the following is how I look at it : ( of
course this is IMHO because I am a 2nd yr. grower with a 691 best).
I am a staunch believer in Capitalism and the free enterprise system alive
and well in this country. If an organization or an individual wishes to sell
/ auction a seed (s), so be it, providing it does not violate existing laws.
There may be other ways to raise money for groups, are they better, I don't
know. "Better" is probably in the mind of each individual. Who is right and
who is wrong, not for me to judge. If this were a moral issue then there
would be a right or a wrong.
Now, concerning the proven seed: 2yrs ago I was given 2 Checkon 815's to
plant. Did everything wrong and grew a 374 lber. Last yr. planted another
815, did a few things right and grew a 691 lber. In 1999 this 815 was as
unproven as any seed out there. The results nationwide of the 815 in 2000
shows this seed has the potential to be as good as anything out there,
dispelling any thoughts that the Checkon 1190 might have been a fluke. In
2001 I will plant the seeds from my 691 and cross it with ?? . If you are
wondering where I am going with this, here it is. I believe if a grower can
latch onto a seed with good genetics (does not have to be a world record),
does their homework on the AGGC site, secures a good seed strain from which
to pollinate, spends a million hours in the patch tending these retched
curcurbytes and the weather and bug gods smile upon your patch, you may grow
a world record pumpkin. Personally, I will find greater satisfaction in
developing "my own," so to speak, world record pumpkin than attempting to buy
it.
The last sentence was not intended to insult anybody who wishes to spend
big bucks for a seed. To each their own.
Best of luck to all in 2001. Scott
