main vine determination off of seedling?

There was lots of discussion on how to determine what
direction the main vine would go by observing the sprouted
seed last spring. I didn't pay attention to the thread, so
now I'm asking for directions on how to determine this.
I'll be giving a one hour class for the Master Gardeners
spring seminar, so I want to know how it's done, so any
urban gardeners can better "aim" their main vine in case
their patch is of a long narrow shape. Thanks.
