Re:So how many growers already knew all this in the first place?

This is a factor I have looked at all along. Often times, there is no
data to see just how the male plant did, but if you can find out, it is
good information. This is just another reason why the 801.5 Stelts is
such a good seed. The fact that the male plant may not have produced a
super large fruit should not eliminate a seed from your choice. How big
of a fruit was grown from the 609 Leammle for Kirk Mombert in '92. At
times ceartain combinations will produce well without the father producing
a big fruit that year. It seems that the good mother genes are dominant
over some of the lesser father genes in some cases. It is still a good
sign to take a seed that is a cross from plants that both did well. Take
the 983.4 Cilibeto, combining two good seeds that both grew large fruit.
The tragic thing to all this is that when we are making out crosses in
July, we don't know how well the plants are going to produce, so we can't
cross the best plants. This problem however is soon to be eliminated with
the continued developement of clonning Atlantic Giants. The future has
many great possabilities.
