Re: size, temp & wilting

Here is a question. I got an ad from Jerry Baker - the guy with all the
garden fixes from common household products. In the add is a teaser that
says, "Hot weather threatening your prized plants? Wilt-proof 'em with
cocoa." Anybody have any ideas about the pricipal behind that idea, or how
cocoa would be used??

This idea is consistent with a plant's natural development. In the early,
cooler part of the growing season, roots and leaves would be the big energy
sinks as they develop, then as the season progresses, the weather heats up
and that's when the fruit development happens. As always, I guess we are
trying to figure out ways to boost those natural rhythms and growth
patterns.
Wasn't it Josh Mappes who claimed that lowering soil temp is key to a big
fruit?? I'm not sure I agree completely, but there may be parts of the
season when cooler soil is better.
Certainly, if we better understood what happens when and what conditions
encourage which stages of growth, we could better direct our attempts to
manipulate things.
