I do not think there is any advantage to starting early. First of all,
when you germinate your seed should be determined by when you want to
plant outside. Once germinated, the plant should not remain in a pot for
more than a week or 2 at the most as it will become pot bound. Once
germinated, the plant must be allowed to grow at it's maximum potential
and must not be "held back" in any way. Secondly, if you plan to go to a
weigh-off, your pumpkin may not last long enough if you start too early.
