Mr Dill & pumpkin growers...
Mr Ray Barenchi's best Howard Dill story is this:
Mr Barenchi had two rapidly growing fruits on a single plant in Year
2000. He had been buying his seeds from Dill's, so he called Mr Dill to
ask his advice. After describing the plant and the characteristics of
the two pumpkins, he asked which of the two fruits he should cull. Mr
Dill advised him that it wouldn't hurt to leave them both on the vine
for a longer time.
Mr Barenchi was puzzled, having believed that number 2 would sap growing
vigor from number, but his respect for Mr Dill ruled his decision. He
left both fruits to grow, and 2 weeks later the fruit went down, the one
that he would have saved. The one he intended to cull grew to 977
pounds, where it remains in a tie with a 1997 pumpkin grown by Chris
Andersen for 2nd place in California, all-time.
God bless Mr Howard Dill and pumpkin growers everywhere!
