Mystery disease

Greetings all,
I am only now getting in touch with my grief from last season.
It started off by having cut worms knock off my seedlings. I managed to
rescue one by putting it in water and it actually grew roots.
A few volunteers came up from the compost (kids Halloween pumpkins)
added to the garden. I was content thinking some crop was better than none.
But a mystery disease made the plants one by one, separated by weeks,
turn yellow and with in about 3 to 4 days the plants were flat. There
was never any sign of squash beetles though there had been the year
before. I religiously scoured my plants every evening for squash bugs
and eggs and successfully (or so I thought) eliminated them.
Interestingly, one of the volunteers actually survived the attack of the
mystery disease. All though all of my vines had rooted along their
runners, one runner continued to grow and finished producing a fruit
even though the rest of the vine had died.
*Any clues to this mystery disease would be appreciated.*
Also I was thinking if there was a soil based virus, would turning the
soil all winter (we have 344 days sun/yr on average here in New Mexico)
help kill the virus (I am thinking UV kills lots of things)?
Thanks
Curt
