Yes, you should cover your plant. There are several ways to make a shade cover.
One is defined on this URL: http://www.eskimo.com/~mcalpin/shade.html Be creative
and be sure the pumpkin does not get wet. You can water around the pumpkin but I
like to keep the soil dry. This will help prevent rot and other issues.
