People unsubscribing and a whole lot more

Hi Rusty,

IMHO We are in such a dormant period right now, that new people subscribe
and than unsubscribe because there is little activity going on here. If we
could get some excitement from the growers across the waters, it would help
a lot. They have been real quiet. I would love to hear how things are going.

I originally came across the Pumpkin List near the end of our growing
season. I had gone through a lot of learning curves and a virus with our
first crop. I couldn't believe all the valuable information listed on the
web sites. I knew that giant pumpkin growers were very serious and dedicated
to their crop. Quality was number one.

It is obvious from reading the giant pumpkin web sites, that it is a lot of
work. The work is constant. I think some people think all you have to do is
throw the seeds in the ground and Mother Nature takes care of the rest. The
growers on this list knows that is not true.

As Spring rolls around I would expect the membership to increase. You guys
and gals have a way of becoming contagious. The list is exciting. Every one
is going through the same thing, every one supports each other and the
sharing really takes off.

With my crop, you hear a lot about how great it is to have new gourd people
but their information is so blatantly void of the real how-to information.
You send your membership in and it's months before you get your membership
card. It takes weeks to get any information you ordered and paid for. They
offer nothing more than a newsletter of suppliers of seeds, product and chit
chat from the conventions. All the work is volunteer but when hundreds send
in money to join their society, there is no excuse for 2 and 3 month delays
in a simple card just to say you belong. My point....Giant Pumpkin Growers
give a lot more for free. A lot more and faster for the buck.

A giant pumpkin grower put in a lot of TLC to get a Giant Pumpkin. Quality
care helps achieve this feat. If I mention maintaining quality in gourds,
people kind of look at me cross-eyed. I also notice their index finger
making circular motions near their heads. The people on this list are dead
serious about their pumpkins and I'm dead serious about my gourds. That is
why I joined this list.

On the personal side of things.
I have put a lot of sweat and broken fingernails in the soil that we live
on. Hubby accuses me of liking to play in the dirt. My Aunt Sadie, God rest
her soul, would be so proud to think her little Southern Belle turned
farmer. I remember the HUGE bore chasing me in the corn crib and me
screaming my head off for Aunt Sadie. I remember the baby chick going doodoo
in my hand and I thought that's how I had gotten the Chicken Pox. I remember
Aunt Sadie breaking the ice in the water troughs for the cows while I got up
high in the loft so the cows wouldn't get me. Yes sireeeee, No farming
for me!!!!
Today I play on our one little ole acre and love every bit of it. Maybe
this keeps me close to my Aunt Sadie.

Finally, Heaven help all you wonderful members. When I turn my first giant
Bushel into a coffee table. Watch Out!!! All of you fantastic pumpkin
growers will receive a picture of my work of art. My new scanner is on
standby :)

How's this for a theory and a whole lot more?
