I try to keep fertilizer levels on the high side , but not to the point of
toxicity. If you watch your leaves, they will tell you when you have gone too
far. New growth ( 3 or 4 inch leaves) should be a healthy lime green (not
dark green). As the leaf grows to maybe 8 inches it should develop a deep
healthy green. If your newly opened growth is dark green, you are too
hot..... just water until the new growth lightens slighty. I think leaf
watching will tell you more about your Nitrogen levels than any soil test.
It's not a bad idea to send off a leaf to a lab to make sure the other
elements are in bounds.
