We had the same experience as Chris. 
We water before going to work(5AM) and again at 3PM when it was above 90
degrees. The plants were grateful.
We have never had a problem with mildew. We also get lots of wind and that
helps as well. Our soil is very sandy(pure sand) so we don't worry about
overwatering.
