Al,
I have burned up a large supply of junk seed over the past several months
for practice starts. I have noticed that by using a nail file to remove
the light colored portion of the seed edges over the crown to the dark seed
coat, my germination success % has improved drastically and start time to
ground eruption has been reduced to 52 hrs. - 54 hrs. @ 85F. Do not sand
the bottom of the seed. Another observation! Look at the bottom of the
seed. There you will find two holes, one small hole and a larger hole which
is slightly recessed. Each time I have planted a seed I have marked the
side of the container as to the direction of the larger recessed hole. With
every seed start I have made the first true leaf points in the direction of
the larger recessed hole. With in a 20 to 30 degree radius the main vine
has started to run in the opposite direction of this larger recessed hole
ie., in the opposite direction of the first true leaf.
This is extremely important for myself as I have limited space 2,000 sq ft.
and need the main vine to run in the proper direction
with out having to re-direct it in the direction I want it to grow!
Hope this helps!
Best Regards
Chris A.
