How early are we talking George. I was thinking of getting an earlier
start than last year which I planted MAY 8. I was wondering if I started
the plant earlier and giving the vine a longer time to get larger. Set a
pumpkin about the same time i always do. Mid-July. Have you tried this
with any luck? >>

I start mine about 4.5 weeks before the last frost, about April 17 here.
This allows me to set fruit between June 20th and July 10th. I believe,
(you will get a lot of differing opinions on this), the Pumpkin should be 90
grown by September 1st. This will mean it should stop growing about a week
before picking at the beginning on October. A mature Pumpkin will loose
little weight after picking, survive moving better and has less chance of
developing a disease. As far as the disease goes that is only true if you
keep a fungicide on the fruit all the time from mid August on. I developed
the direct method many years ago because I live in a hollow and the nights
get cold from mid August on. This makes it necessary for my Pumpkin to get
most of it’s growth by the end of August or it never will.
