Wendy,
I am an evening waterer myself. My reasoning is that it doesn't evaporate as
quickly as it would if it was put on in the morning, or day. Gives my passive
solar heating system more time to warm up the water. Plants also do most of
their growing at night, so water readily available at night gives the plant
better growing conditions.
Now keep in mind all this is thrown out when the air tempurature rises above
95 during the day, in which case all sprinklers go on at once directly from
the well in order to keep those plants from being damaged by heat.
