a composting experiment


I while back I talked about aerating a 10,000 lb compost pile to get it to
hot compost without the need to turn it.  So I tried it over the holidays.
I ran a dryer hose from my househeat, through the catdoor, and down to a
couple lengths of 3" sewer pipe burried under the compost pile.  I plugged
the ends and drilled holes in their sides to distribute the airflow.

It seems to be working. The mixture went hot in less than 48 hours, and
with luck it will stay that way.

The downside, of course, is that I had to dig through 4,000 lbs of two
month old pumpkin slime (in pungent anaerobic decomposition mode) to bury
the pipes.  My   Holiday cheer was not improved...
