I have set one up here in NZ that worked well.
I did the whole comp as it is part of my job.
The actual weigh- off was well advertised through sponsorship and we had
to arganise electronic scales and a suitable venue. As each pumpkin came
in it was measured across the top and middle (we will not do that again
as it was time consuming and heavy work). Each pumpkin was coded
according to each age group EG 0/8;1 for the first pumpkin in the 0 - 8
age group.
All was writtenn down by a scribe. The weight was given to the grower on
a piece of paper folded so only they knew what it was. The collated
results were put down so the heaviest in each group were known fairly
easily. The Mayor judged the poshest, the ugliest and the best
presented. All prizes were given out withinn 1/1 hour of the last
weigh-in. All pumpkin growers were given 'participent' status and
received a special certificate within three days of the weigh - in.
Exit interviews at the weigh - in showed that a lot of fun was had
especially by children and family groups which is what we wanted. Asa a
matter of interest the overall winner was a real 'petrolhead'. Dressed
in leather and very 'gruff'. We suspected that he got his horticultural
experience in the back blocks growing NZ Green. BUT it just goes to show
that giant pumpkin growing appeals to all.
Have fgun and please ask if there is anything I can clarify.
Cheers
