IMHO......
My take on your last question, heredity (genes) prevent one plant from
producing one 3000 pounder, but may produce 6 fruit with that combined weight.
I know several people who eat enormous amounts of food, but retain their slim
physique. Middle age made no difference. If a genetic propensity is there for
size, that's what you'll get.
Conversely, you can't plant New England Pie pumpkins and cultivate them to
produce an 800 lb fruit. I maintain that the answer lies in plant
genetics....breeding carefully and scientifically and charting the progress
over several years helps.
In Florida, our finest, sweetest fruit is grown on sour orange stock.....the
best trees are grafted this way for excellence.
The previous talk on hybrid vigor makes perfect sense from a breeding
standpoint. Introducing fresh lines into existing seed stock may be the best
way of keeping the fruit larger.
As usual, just me thinking aloud!
