For those of you that have been following this inquiry about the parentage
of the Laemmle 609 here is the scoop! There isn't one......
I talked to Helmut Laemmle personally today, and he told me exactly how he
got the 609. Apparently about five years previous to 89' some "gentleman"
gave him a handful of seeds to try. He got started in the sport and the
first year grew a 200 pounder. He said he just left it grow, in other
words open pollenated. He said he kept the biggest fruit each year and
saved the seeds from it. Ending up in 1989 where he grew the 609. I
think many of you who are interested in studying the genetics of the most
sucessful AGS are puzzled by this dilema. Not knowing the genetic
background of basically half of the parentage of many large fruit is very
frustrating. Apparently he has no seeds left from any of his pumpkins. He
did say however that he gave numerous packages of seeds away.
My question to the group and anyone you may know of off the list
is........Does anyone anywhere have any seeds that are from the 609, or
that are pure selfed offspring of the 609? Does anyone have any
speculations as to what seed would have been sold or given away at that
time 1983-1985??? What was the popular seeds then? Who was giving them
away or selling them?
Rick
