I haven't actually thought about it, but yes, the big ones would be set much
closer to the edge of the patch when doing it CTM (Xmas Trree Method), but
where else would a person want them? Easy to measure, and tend to . The
closer to the edge of the patch, the less you have to disturb the plant and
soil.
Please bear in mind that I have not tried this before, so your guess is as
good as mine.
