Fwd: "Week" Competition

Joe:

The rules of the GPC are not that you can't enter other competition than the
GPC weigh-offs. It is that you can't bring a pumpkin to a GPC weigh-off that
has been entered in competition elsewhere. You could take one pumpkin to
Raleigh and enter. That pumpkin could then not be entered in a GPC weigh-off.
However, you could bring a different pumpkin. I believe this was decided when
someone tried to go to several weigh-offs with the same pumpkin.

The Giant Growers Association will have an independent weigh-off on
Sept. l8, l998, in Raleigh, North Carolina. There will be a $5000 award
for lst place, $2800 2nd, and $l000 3rd, for the largest pumpkin and
watermelon. Also prizes for cantaloupe and tomatoes. You must become a
member of their newsletter for $20 by May lst. to be eligible. Weighing
off here may make you ineligible for GPC weigh-offs later in October. I
need to check on the exact rules here (Marv Meisner can you tell us for
certain about this GPC rule?). This is a national competition. Last
years top l0 weighed over 500lbs. First, 649.5, Joe Miley from IN., 2nd
was 600.5, George Killgore, TN, 3rd was 599.5, Andrea Benton, NC. George
and Andrea are a couple of "Heavy Hitters" of the South that we will get
to know more about through the SPGA. This competition is now sponsored
by Edward Weeks. Raleigh is a major site for growers competing for the
Southern Cup.
