Joe: The white stuff is captan which is a powder that becomes a paste when you add water to it. It is used more often than not at the stem site where small cracks are common. You fill them in like you are doing cement or plaster. Don't spread it on or mix it up with your fingers. It is toxic. It is used to prevent infection and allows the small crack to heal. The captan should be washed off before going to a weigh-off so that the judges can be certain the crack does not go all the way through. I use it on any cracks or injured areas on my pumpkin. I have seen many pictures of AGs that seem to have some white stuff applied to the stem and blossom ends. I guess this is Captan. Am I right? Is this a common practice? Why do they do this. Shouldn't this material come off before it is officially weighed? (Marv, I am sure you will have something to say on this one) Joe Mills --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@mallorn.com with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE PUMPKINS
