Joe,
I hope your 408 was a bad year. I'm in clay down in Richmond, VA. The pH of
my soil is 5.5. The pH of my manure is 7.0; who would have thought it
possible. My tomatoes get bottom rot because of lack of calcium. Do I use
CaSO4 or lime? Anything I do will probably be an improvement over last year.
I hope my soil test comes back soon; so I can over analyze it. I wonder what
too much CaSO4 would do to pumpkins? Why are my pumkins green on the side
that gets no light?
70 to 1000 in 6 months or less,
Patrick Veltman

Patrick,
You may want to add both CaSO4 and limestone. The limestone will bring up
the pH of that 5.5 soil. CaSO4 (gypsum) will not change the pH of the soil
much, but it is supposed to be useful in breaking up clay soils and both will
add calcium. A heavy clay soil will take more limestone to bring up the pH
than a sandy soil will.
