Hello all:
The sun is shining here in Pennsylvania. And when that happens my thoughts
turned to germination. I had watched the most recent pumpkin video from our
friend in Washington, Joel Holland, in "The Land of Pumpkins." He suggested
germinating your seeds in a pop cooler with several bottles of warm water
which he replaced three times a day. The water was at 140 degrees to start
and, of course, cooled as time went by. In several days his seed had sprouted.
Thinking about this I decided that if I went out and bought an adjustable
aquarium water heater I could do the same thing only even more controlled. So,
I got a water heater that goes to 92 degrees, put it in a pan of water in my
pop cooler and guess what? The temperature in the cooler is now 85 degrees
after a few hours and rising. And very humid. I believe this will work out
nicely.
Also I can use it when I make sour dough bread as this requires a temperature
of around 90 degrees for 4 days or so to get the bacteria and yeast growing.
