Re: Drying Gourds

Hi Rick,
I grew alot of birdhouse gourds this year. Here is what I did, I don't know
if it's correct or not though.I left them on the vine until the vines were
dead. Harvested them and washed them well in a weak bleach solution. Put
them on a pallet to dry outside in the sun. I kept them therefrom early
October until mid-November (we live in NH) then I drilled a hole through
the neck and 3 or 4 drain holes in the bottom and hung them on the rafters
in the barn where it's well ventilated.A few of them are dry enough now(I
shake them and I can hear the seeds rattle) to drill the big bird hole in
them. They do get moldy and splotchy looking, and I plan on sanding that off
when they are really dry. Some of them may develop a soft spot and rot but
I think they are the immature ones.
Hope this helps you.
