Hello folks,
I would like to hear opinions on the way ahead now.
I have an Andersen #815 covering 40% of the patch and the Ryan #554 covering
another 20%, I had planned to have only one plant on 100%. There is also
another Ryan (much younger covering another 5%) and a plant from my last
seasons #400 growing in my vege garden.
The #815 has produced about 20 females of which I have pollinated about 16.
Currently 8 or more of these have failed and most of the others are too
early to tell. Two look like they may take but are still below critical
mass. Most of the flowers were selfed but of the two that look good at least
one was crossed with the #554. The #400 was allowed to grow unattended and
appears to have set one good looking fruit.
The #554 has only produced 3 female flowers but all appear to have set and
producing large fruit.
The flowers on the #554 are much bigger that the #815 including the fruit at
time of pollination. Also the fruit stems on the #815 are not much more than
1/2" thick compared to 1"+ on the #554. The main vine is thicker and leaves
look more robust.
I am thinking that if the #815, which has received all my time and effort,
does not show more promise within a weeks it will have to go.
