RE: pumpkins DIGEST V1 #546

Hi Team

What a great break - so now it is back to work. A week in the thermal
pools in Rotorua, Christmas in Wellington and a month painting the house
with large applications of lolling around and a cold one under the old
Elm tree.Weather here is good with the temp creeping up the thirties. We
now have watering restrictions with no hoses or sprinklers allowed so it
is a case of being 'sneaky' at night time.

I have three plants established, an Andersen 634, 977 and a Smith (NZ)
530. The 634 is by far the strongest and the only one to have female
flowers to date.

There is lots of fertilizer going on, a liquid mainly high in Potash to
encourage flowering.

Plants around the province are in the same state so now is the time to
get them edumacated on pollination. We have sent out one letter to all
growers (about 300) and will send them another soon. I will encourage
them to send a post card or letter to those of you who were able to
supply seeds so you may get something in the post in a month or so.

Pruning and burying the ends of the growth anround the base plant is a
busy job to supplement the root system.

There are three seperate leaders racing down the vege patch, one from
each plant. I hope to pollinate the 634 with a male 977 as the 634 is
really strong.

That is about it in a nutshell. Our Weigh-Off and Pumpkin Festival is
all organised. Worm Farms will be the prizes and they are now being
stored all ready.

I will do a random phone survey this week to see how the picture is
across the province. I will also call the best growers from last year -
the real fanatics on whom we depend for a few whoppers.

I'll keep you all posted. I do not have a computer at the moment so have
logged on to a neighbours machine. I hope to have a new one installed
today with sound and stuff like that

Have a 'Parky' day
