Hello all,
Looking through the New Scientist I see a piece on flower power and the
parallels to the animal kingdom. They refer to competition between sperm
and between pollen. In particular an article by Dianne Marshall of UNM in
American Journal of Botany Vol 85 writes how students hand pollinated wild
radishes and found that those pollinated by one male had higher pollination
rates than those pollinated by multiple males.
This is attributed to male pollen attempting to inhibit the action of other
male pollen.
It does not indicate if this is the case for males from the same plant.
There is also an article on the competition between mother and child for
nutrients which has direct parallels. It seems that the growing fruit will
produce gibberellic acid and indole acetic acid to take nutrients and the
plant will curb this by producing ascorbic acid.
