   Hey Punkineers,

It's that time of year... In addition to AGs, I would like to have a go
at Burpee Prizewinner Hybrids this season. If anyone has a stash of proven
seed from this pumpkin, I'd be happy to trade some seed from my 557# AG.
Thanks,

Ernest,
Your best bet is to send away to Burpee to get the seed. This pumpkin is a
hybrid. Planting seeds from a hybrid pumpkin will not yield the same results
that the hybrid produced the year before. Has anybody noticed that the seeds
in a prizewinner pumpkin are quite often brown fat seeds, where the hybrid
original seeds are kind of flat and whiteish. You will probably get an O.K.
pumpkin, but the hybrid vigor and consistency will be lost. I don't know of
any Atlantic Giant hybrids...they are just open or hand pollinated winter
squash. Actually, the prizewinners are in the same C. Maxima family. If
someone has 5 or 6 years of spare time on their hands, you might be able to
make a hybrid out of an Atlantic Giant. It would take years of inbreeding and
selecting to get two consistent inbred lines....then cross pollinate them. The
resulting seeds might be hybrids. Any takers for this project? Not me. Good
luck.
