RE: countries represented

Hi all,
South Africa is represented - I've been a bit slack about reporting to
the list, but here's a bit of news. We planted 12 plants of which 7 have
survived. The seed we grew was Dills AG supplemented later by a kind
donation from Mike in Oregon of 3 different types of seed of illustrious
origins (I don't have the details here at work, but I remember that the
names Ciliberto, Langevin and Holland were among the parents!) There are
currently five large pumpkins in the patch - mostly on the Dill plants
because they went into the ground about a month before the seed Mike
sent us. There is one pumpkin on one of Mikes plants which has a lovely
orange colour compared to the Dills which are all a dirty cream colour
and have marked ribbing compared to the orange one. I drive past the
plants down the driveway on my way to work in the morning and again in
the evening and I'll swear that the darn things are bigger each time I
see them. My husband Buster does most of the work on the plants as he's
at home a lot more than me - the only time I get to inspect them closely
is on weekends. I had a good look on Sunday and two of the fruits seem
to have been pecked or gnawed by something. There are small, shallow
holes in the skin which are starting to heal over with a sort of brown
rough bark-like growth. We haven't put anything on these scars and so
far there isn't any rotting or anything. Otherwise the plants all look
as healthy as 30 degree plus daily temperatures and alternating drought
and floods allow! As Tony Hickman described - some of the inner leaves
on the older plants are dying and we're vigilantly watching for powdery
mildew which has decimated our "normal" pumpkin and squash patch. So far
so good. I promise to get regular OTT measurements on all the pumpkins
so that we can judge how fast they are growing and approximately what
they weigh and to report same to the list soon.
Cheers for now,
Sue in Sunny SA
