Tony,
About the long gourd that set too low...If I were you, I'd try to set one
up higher.  I'm assuming that you still have plenty of growing time left.
My 97" last year grew for just over 30 days (end of July to the beginning
of September). If you want to mature it for seeds you'll need longer, but
30-35 days is enough time to get it long.
