mice bitting females

Hello list,
I need some help here, every female I have planned to pollinate have been
bitten by what appears to look like a field mouse. They don't eat them, just
take a small bite or sink thier teeth into them. Thought about putting nylon
hosiery over them and sprinkling the hose with red pepper, think this would
work?? Anyone else had to deal with mice in the past?? I am ready to
pollinate first part of next week, providing I can deter the mice!
