RE: AG's and mulch
I am mulching heavily with straw. When you remove the mulch, you can see a
LOT of roots that are being protected and kept moist under the mulch. I
have no weeds where I have mulched, and have not had an insect or rodent
problem either.
Mulch should not make your soil acidic when it is applied. However, over
time mulch will decompose and will add humic acid to your soil, which will
lower your pH. This should not affect your crop this year. You should
check your pH once a year in any event. In the U.S. west, soils are
generally alkaline, and sometimes will not be affected one iota from
mulching. I don't know what your pH experience is in your part of CA,
however.

Subject: RE: AG's and mulch
This is my 2nd year growing AG's, the 1st year I did not mulch. This year I
have put down two truckloads of mulch around my two plants. This has saved
me
extreme amounts of time in keeping the weeds down. I think this has helped
in
keeping the bugs down too because I'm seeing fewer of them this year. I
think
this is because the bugs now have fewer places to hide. I only have one
concern, that is by adding so much mulch I think it might have an effect on
my soil pH level. Is there any one out there that has had a problem with
there pH level by adding too much mulch?
