Stunted Growth
Hi everybody,
I'm sorry for taking up space with this but I am very proud of what I feel is a moral victory over squash bugs and gummy stem blight. I just had to share it!
I had 2 hills of AG plants earlier with 5 plants in each hill. At a very young age (only 6 or so leaves on each plant) the squash bugs hit. I had a battle with them for a couple weeks and then the rain started and I ended up with a classic case of gummy stem blight. I lost all but one plant because I did not use a preventive maintenance plan to keep the bugs and desease away. You live and learn and I have learned my lesson for next year!
Anyway, the one plant I had left was looking really sick for over 2 weeks. I have no idea why I didn't pull it up and forget the whole idea but I didn't. I doctored on it everyday and now the plant has put out beautiful new growth and is finally starting to vine off. The main vine is now about 2 foot long. I know I am way late now to raise any kind of champion pumpkin but I am going to get as much out of that plant as I can even if it is only 100lbs or less. I feel like it deserves the chance.
I know it probably sounds trivial to most people but as a first year grower I really felt good tht I was able to save at least one plant.
Given the fact that the growing season here in Central Virginia will extend close to the middle of October how big a pumpkin can I realistically expect to grow on a vine that is only 2 to 3 foot long today?
Thanks and Good Luck Everybody!
