self-pollination query

I'm looking for some input on the topic of self-pollination...

Having a small plot (33' x 10', north/south), I put one plant at each
end of the patch hoping to cross pollinate and then rip out the weaker
of the two.

However, my Mackenzie 1010 is doing significantly better than my Emmons
790 -- longer vine, larger leaves, thicker stem, less bug damage, more
flowers, etc. Do I really want to cross pollinate with a seemingly
weaker plant?

So what do you say? What are the merits and disadvantages of
self-pollination?
