Beth,
   I remember traveling out  to Tom Norlins plant about 4 years ago and
checking things out...He had a pumpkin very similar to what you
describe.....only on a  secondary vine ....(I think) ...vine terminated
right at the fruit....His was in the mid 600's..good luck
