Leaves

Hi...I still don't seem to have the hang of this hobby yet so I have a
question for the forum. I have a small backyard patch this year.If i let my
plant "do its thing" the vines go out from the main and leaves develope every
...say....18 inches or so. The stems reach up and leaves develope in a cup
shaped form as if to catch the water . (apparently these things haven't
evolved to realize we dont overhead water ).At the ends of the vines after
terminating and along the borders of the patch the leaves grow larger and
flatter...up to 30 inches across.
Now im sure that this extra growth of the leaves is better, barring a wind
problem, and surely has something to do with "removing every other secondary",
but would I be better off with a few big flat leaves or smaller cuppy-shaped
leaves? Is it just surface area ? How about trimming every other LEAF? Like I
said...I have a small patch and need all i can get.....looking for
opinions....Glenn A
