Dear Rob and Sue,
I grow all of my pumpkins on a steep hill. What works
for me is to build platforms under the pumpkins with 2' x 2' sections of plywood
propped up with bricks and or concrete blocks and held in place by metal
stakes. I have grown pumpkins over 200 pounds using this method. It's a
lot of work but if your only land is the side of a hill then you have to make do
with what you have. Any large pumpkins not properly supported will roll
down the hill and take your vine with it. You can try to dig out a flat
area in your hill however my hill is solid rock and it I can't dig it out.
Good luck.
