Phenomenal Growth
Group,
I must share with you the good news that my single 99 Hester 793, which won
only a fifth place at Canby, Ore last year (and last year was a "bad" year in
the NW - WOW!) is growing at the rate of 8 in. per day in circ. It is now at
86 in.This is 16 in. more than Al Eaton's chart in in How to Grow World Class
Giant etc. etc. (pg 114). I attribute the growth to mild temps both day and
night for the month of July - 83 - 88 degrees in day time and I guess about
60 at night. No pests or diseases, although the dreaded powdery mildew lurks
only 30 feet away in some dahlia plants at the side of our house. I have
taken Jon Hunt's technique from his last year's winner, and am keeping a
dilute fert solution flowing each day in my drip system. I suspect this is
the big plus.
I put up the sun shade "tent" today over the baby. Not a whole lot to do
between now and October but prune a few tips, bite finger nails. And dream.
For instance ---
Do the numbers - eight inches a day for the next 60 days equals 480 inches,
plus the present 86 inches - the thing should weight about 3,600 pounds by
contest time, and sink the east end of my yard so that the house slides into
the back neighbor's lot. Well, might irritate my wife, but I'll buy her some
flowers. She will understand.
