Brief Washington update
I returned from taking my girls to Disneyland to find pumpkins growing in
the P-patch. A big thank you to Gordon Tanner for making the first
pollinations out there for me while I was away. First fruit was set on the
871 Richart on 6-29. All the plants are growing like crazy and rapidly
filling the space I've allowed them and are facing imminent collisions.
Vine pruning and burying took a lot of time on my return. All the plants,
871 Richart, 835 McIntyre, 723 Bobier and 720.5 Welty have fruit set now.
The Weltys are a nice pretty green color, the others yellow. Pollination is
taking place daily with multiple fruit. I'll continue to set fruit on all
plants through the weekend and then I'll start pinching off the late
developing ones, and taking measurements to determine which to cull. I'm
already terminating some of the secodaries that are reaching 15' in lentgh.
I found my first cucumber beetle today as well. Squished it. It looks like
it's going to be a good summer.
