Yikes!! Quick wash it off! Who knows what nasties are lurking in the
soil? I would use dry captan powder. Many people use water to make a
paste, but you want the split to remain dry so it can heal up. I would use
an old fashioned dust blower and blow some captan into the split and keep
the area dry. Simply allowing the split to dry out may be adequate. Last
year I had splits on a couple fruit. Both went into the flesh of the
pumpkin but did not get into the cavity. One was treated with dry Captan
powder and the other was just allowed to dry and kept dry. Both did well.
Can it go the distance? Sure, but the split may continue to grow. It
sounds like a really nice grower so you'll want to try to keep it if you
can. Be careful of stem stress as a split being weaker is more vulnerable.
But never shove dirt into a wound. That goes for people as well a pumpkins.
Since you already have contaminated the injury with soil, I would opt for
the dry fungicide to help kill any infection that may be getting started.
