Hello to everyone:

I just wanted to take a minute of you time and point out a few things I
learned this year as a first time grower. First and most important is that
this has to be the friendliest hobby, sport, competition or what ever name
you want to give it. I have met some of the nicest people on line and in Elk
Grove at the 2000 weigh off. No for the thing I would like to put a warning
label on. First and foremost, don’t get in to big of hurry to get your patch
ready. I did mine in January then after a few rains and some warm weather I
did it again in February and again in April. After all the extra work I did
from getting in too big of hurry I finally planted in early April. Well then
came the FROST!! I was warned about, that didn't help the little baby plants
even thou they were in make shift hot houses. Once every thing was growing
and the weather was warming the next thing I learned was always check to see
WHY the hose wont come any further no matter how hard you pull. After
pulling on my hose as hard as I could I went to see what was up and somehow
I got it under the soaker hose that was coiled around my three week old baby
and I was yanking the stem in two almost. Next I learned about water and how
240 gallons a week is just a little much for a 500 Sq Ft patch with two
plants is just a bit much. Then there is that little Fertilizer thing (just
because a guy work at an Agriculture fertilizer company) doesn't means he
knows how much to use. Next was the Insect spray I sprayed for everything I
thought, and I killed everything even the good bugs that eat mites. The only
thing I didn't’t kill were the mites I didn't know the could kill so much
foliage in just a few days and now I am learn humility as I bragged to all
about my 1500 pound pumpkin. This Pumpkin Growing thing can be a very
humbling thing and a great learning tool for more than just gardening it
also teaches you patents and understanding. And I would like to go over that
don’t get in a big hurry thing one more time as my pumpkins are almost done
growing in the middle of July. One last thing never give up you'll never
know what an AG will do next
