vine problem

Today the end of the main vine was showing
wilting leaves. I inspected and found an oozing syrupy clear fluid coming
from the vine at a secondary/leaf connection. I cut off this part of
vine. I noticed some softness around the two or three previous
secondary/leaf connections. I haven't had much of a bug problem. We
did just get a lot of rain though after a dry spell. Any ideas as to why
the vine was/is oozing?
