Here is the latest from the patch East of Bob Troys house.
It has been pretty amazing the last few weeks with day temps between 70 and
74 Degrees with nights dipping well to the top 60's. Even with that said I
had pretty good growth.
Mound # 1. The Flying Dutchman. 986 Hester*00 (900 Lyons sibbed) I have
one pumpkin 12 feet out on the main that decided to join the party last
Friday since then it has bulked up from disappointment to 50 inches with day
20 falling on the 31st of July. There are eight nice pumpkins set on the
secondaries and a few in the 20 LB class. This is the prettiest shape and
color I have ever seen "even in pictures" it is still almost perfectly round
and the ribs are even and pronounced. Incredible plant with robust vines and
thick heavy leaves. A real crowd pleaser !!!!
Mound # 2. Carnage. 791 Glasier 98 (567.5 Mombert self and sibbed) There
is one pumpkin about 10 1/2 feet out on the main. I might loose this one !!!
70 inches circumference on day 20 and building up steam. Well, over 20 lbs
since 8:00 AM this morning (6:07 PM now) I can't figure out where the vine
stress is coming from? it has a few long cracks in the stem that worry me and
I am relieving the stress by cutting roots on the main and the secondaries
but haven't removed any secondaries yet. I put stiraphome blocks under the
vine to support it then an hour later it was too tight again. Go figure !! It
is sure a learning experience to say the least..It is pollinated with the 723
Bobier for good genetics for next year. The pumpkin looks like a giant
pepper. High shoulders with a aero dynamic slope to the Giant Baboon butt.
Not pretty but very impressive to say the least !!! I sure could use some
advice about the vine management please! I sure wouldn't want to loose this
one to my inexperience !! Thank you all in advance !!!
Mound # 3. 547 Kournikakis 00 (935 Lloyd selfed)
This one was the seprise for many reasons not only did it pop a squash YES
G.... YOUR FAVORITE !! But on day 10 it is 27 inches and has a six inch long
stem. Beautiful rich green on HEAVY stout vines with leaves dark and heavy !!
NICE NICE plant. A real winner... Glad I grew it. I haven't given it a pirate
ship name yet but with the giant scar that runs across its beautiful skin
(from a leaf) I have a few ideas.
Today I watered heavy and am hoping to get some REAL growth from these
things. When I apply the mildicide it slows the pumpkins growth by half and I
am worried about the surge as after I spray I may get 3.5 inches diameter and
three days later I am packing 18 to 20 lbs. But as long as it is growing I am
happy...
Thank you for sitting through another Torrance report any help would just
be wonderful... Thank you all in advance !!!
