I am not sure what they may call it in Australia, but you can try to buy
some Captan Powder, mix the powder with a bit of water to create a paste and
then apply this paste to the soft spot. It may help. It is a fungicide (use
gloves when you mix it and apply it, don't breathe in the powder, mix it
outside). It will dry to a 'cakey' texture and seal up the problem.   I have
done this myself to heal scars and bad spots with great success.  Your
problem may be too far gone though, hey..... it's worth a try.  Don't let
children touch the captain.

Before the weigh-off try and remove the Captain with a soft cloth.. be
careful not to reinjure the pumpkin.
