Re: Question for weighoff veterans

If all is going well, your pumpkin should be putting on weight (even just a few pounds a day) right up to the moment you cut it.  If it stops growing before the weigh-off day, you have a problem, and that is usually rot.  I have been growing AG's for 7 season's now and this has held true.  Also, I have been growing a produce garden for 30+ years so I have some experience.

I once had a pumpkin (3 years ago) that stopped growing in the middle of August, it was growing gang-busters then all of a sudden nothing... a week later it showed the reason.. the main stem fell out, and it was due to rot brought on by the darn Vine Borer.  Now I am using Scimitar, hopefully it will work.  Oh, this pumpkin taped out at over 550lbs in mid August and was growing 20+lbs per day before it stopped.  It could have been a bomber???

Good luck, have fun.

Subject: Question for weighoff veterans

This question is directed primarily at those who have been competing in weighoffs consistently for many years :

When you harvested your pumpkins for weighoffs, were they still increasing in size? Could they have obtained a greater weight if left on the plant longer? I'm looking for an answer based on the average rather than a year-by-year breakdown.

Thanks,
Mike
