Sounds like what I have George. Mine start at the root and slowly work out and eventually the whole plant dies. I can't find out what it is for sure yet.

Here is another disease with symptoms similar to what we seem to be seeing. Has anyone had experience with this one? Some of the symptoms apply to two of my plants this year but so do some from Bacterial Wilt and the Root Knot Nemotode. I wished I'd known about that one earlier so I would have been able to look at the roots for the identifying characteristic.

Phytophthora Root Rot Phytopthora capsici and other species
Symptoms:
Phytophthora is a widely distributed organism that often infects plants early in the growing season. Symptoms may be hidden until "apparently" healthy plants collapse very quickly, particularly as they experience the stress that accompanies fruit loading. Plants often wilt and die without changing color. Control:
Proper irrigation scheduling and excellent drainage are imperative. All cucurbits with "wet feet" are predisposed to Phytophthora. Raised bed planting may facilitate good drainage.
