Beth --
No more evidence of borers so far, altho I will continue spraying.
However, new problem. I believe I have read about this on the listserv but
cannot find the letter through the FAQs.
Some of my leaves are turning a dark green and are getting wrinkled. The
dark green is following the veins of the leaves. Also it looks like some
are becoming ragged -- as if they are being eaten.
Is this a mildew problem? (After spraying the insecticide, I see white
spots on the leaves the next day. I assume it is just the dried spray.
Could it be the beginning of mildew.?
Also, when I spray the insecticide, do I just spray the vines and stems.
Or do I spray the leaves as well?

By the way, these AG seeds are creating giant leaves. Much bigger than the
normal pumpkins I have grown in the past. I am thinking I planted them too
close together. (I did that in part because I assume I was going to lose
some.)

Here's a tip for newbies and procrastinators. You newbies thought you got
through the borer wars and now you can sit back and relax, eh? Not so
fast.
Here in Virginia, and I suspect in most other areas too, it is almost time
for powdery mildew. Once it starts, it's very difficult to stop. Stopping
it before it starts is your best bet. So get out the Daconil. As Dale
Mellott so sagely pointed out to me, Daconil, whether it's on your shelf or
a retailer's, settles much more than many insecticides, so shake it like
crazy. Then mix it up and get spraying.
Other years I've had August 5th on my calendar to start preventive
spraying,
but each time a few little spots showed up before I sprayed. I just did my
first 2002 app today.
BTW... Rootshield claims it can be used to prevent powdery mildew. Has
anyone here used it that way? What did you think?
