RE: SVB's in WNY

Spent about an hour so far looking for eggs, found a pair and a cluster of
3. Charging up the camera battery, will try to take pics if anyone's
interested. These were all in very difficult to locate & access
locations--one was on the base of a 3-4" long tiny male flower stem and the
3 were at the base of a leaf stalk where it curves under to join the vine.
You really have to look hard to find them.

Subject: SVB's in WNY

I sprayed this morning around 9:30-10am; about an hour or 2 later I saw an
SVB moth around the plot, near the north/stump end of my small backyard
patch, on an upper leaf surface. It was the most inopportune time as I was
on the phone making plans for the afternoon. By the time I found the
flyswatter, I lost sight of it. I'm also growing corn, crimson clover and a
beneficial bug blend of stuff ("good bug blend") and it was then resting on
either clover or something else but as soon as I headed that way, it took
off. I just got home an hour or 2 ago after being out all afternoon at a car
show and checked some stems & found 2 eggs side by side, about an 1/8"
apart, about 1/2 way up a leaf stalk.

I don't think this SVB overwintered in my patch; I added about 12-16" of
municipal compost/fertilizer to my patch & don't think it would have
survived the weight as they usually pupate in the top 6" or so of soil, plus
I had no borers that escaped swatting & spraying last season & no vine
problems. I did have a bunch of eggs I took pics of last year as well as an
adult moth, and as I removed all my vines, I checked everything very
thoroughly before throwing the vines away. I don't believe anybody nearby
grows any pumpkins or squash, as I'm probably the only vegetable grower in
my neighborhood besides my next door neighbor growing my heirloom tomatoes.
I'll pull out a big piece of cardboard to lay on to inspect the vines more
closely in the morning.
